ESOC SciFi-Club at AIRLEBNIS-Tag, 13.12.2016 – “Ask the professionals!”
ESOC SciFi-Club persists from persons, who are enthusiastic in science and space flight and in SF. In science and the stories behind. Airlebnis-Tag „Sternenjäger“ was ESOC (and EUMETSAT) SciFi-Clubs first performance.
In Terminal 1 the Science Fiction-area was situated, with our stand, in Terminal 2 was spaceflight situated, with exibitions of ESA and school lab of DLR with an interactive stage program.
Our Team: Gustavo, Vinia, Andreas, Alessandro, Colette, Liliane, Robert and me. And: Gustavos and Lilianes daughter and nice Beatriz and Malu, who conducted the largest part of the communication with kids and youngsters in a professional manner. They were brilliant! Our next generation! Our themes: The connection of Science and Fiction with a large quiz and a fact check of „The Martian“ of Andy Weird (book and movie).
We had much fun and a great day!
Our Eyecatcher: A gigantic screen with films and movies about the numerous mars-missions of ESA and NASA and to the zu den zahlreichen Marsmissionen von ESA und NASA, cutouts of „Making of“ “The Martian” and a little bit Rosetta.
Give-aways: We gave away several square kilometers of ESA-posters and several square meter of ESA-Info-brochures.
Our Quiz: The extensed quiz about spaceflight, astronomy and science fiction was a great success the largest win was a BB 8!
Our Droid: BB 8 was Gustavos stroke of genius – controlled by an iPhone-app the small robot curved around feet and climbed the edge of the carpet. The happy winner of BB8 is Alessandro, who must have had an enormous knowledge in the quiz (I could not have answered a third of the questions). Our Mission: Science is fascinating and fun! Science and Science Fiction are even more fun! And such a club-event is really great fun.
Mars geology and „The Martian”-Factcheck
The book/The movie “The martian” is an excellent example for scientific science fiction. An astronaut strands on mars, his only chance to survive is his scientific knowledge.
After its publication, the book was at first an insider´s tip for science-fascinated SF-Fans. After the movie the hype around Mark Watney and his rescue began. The movie gives less scientific details, but the martian landscapes are wonderful on a large screen. Some people of the filmteam said in an interview, that they hope to inspire young people for science and space flight.
„The Martian“ resulted in several fact checks, in which experts from NASA, ESA and other persons discussed, how realistic the movie is. An actual movie or book is the ideal hanger, to discuss with many people about science and space flight.
Sand from Sahara, sandstone and basalt from earth are very similar to martian stones and sand. Some fossils in limestone and black shale symbolized the possibility of fossil life traces on Mars. A potatoe represented the martian potatoe-plantage. Our fact-check was a mix from climate, communication, biology, geology and space flight.
Additionally to our presentation I gave a very short talk about astrobiology.
